Carpenter Ant
Appearance
- One of the largest ants
- Can be one-fourth to three-eighth inch long
- Most common color is black
- Can be reddish or yellowish in color as well
Behavior
- Nest in dead portions of standing trees, stumps, logs or under stones
- They must have a constant source of moisture to survive
- If they invade homes, they can do great damage by hollowing out wood to make their nests
- Nests indoors are usually associated with a water leak or water damage.
- Very difficult to control
- Satellite colonies can be formed off the original nest site
Diet
- They do not eat wood
- Prefer sweets and meats but will also feed on other insects
- Favorite food outdoors is honeydew
