Appearance


  • Can be up to one inch in length

  • Yellow and black in color with hairy bodies giving them a fuzzy appearance

Behavior


  • Social insects

  • Non-aggressive unless provoked

  • Nests are usually found in old rodent burrows or other types of cavities in the ground

  • Sometimes, nests are found above ground in wood piles or attics

  • Can sting multiple times

  • Colonies die when the weather gets cold

  • Fertilized queens overwinter and begin new colonies each spring
