Appearance


  • One of the largest ants

  • Can be one-fourth to three-eighth inch long

  • Most common color is black

  • Can be reddish or yellowish in color as well

Behavior


  • Nest in dead portions of standing trees, stumps, logs or under stones

  • They must have a constant source of moisture to survive

  • If they invade homes, they can do great damage by hollowing out wood to make their nests

  • Nests indoors are usually associated with a water leak or water damage.

  • Very difficult to control

  • Satellite colonies can be formed off the original nest site

Diet


  • They do not eat wood

  • Prefer sweets and meats but will also feed on other insects

  • Favorite food outdoors is honeydew
