Appearance

  • Dark, reddish brown in color

  • Approximately 3/4 -1 inch in length

  • Easy to identify by the two pincher like appendages (forceps) protruding from their abdomen

Behavior

  • Nocturnal

  • Prefer moist, shady places like lawn clippings, compost, mulch, under rocks, and in rotten stumps

  • Can not withstand long periods of dryness

  • Enter buildings through cracks in walls

Diet

  • Scavengers - feed on decaying plant and animal matter, as well as mold and insects

Prevention

  • Remove unnecessary mulch and plants from the outside of structure 

  • Seal cracks and crevices

  • Treat harborage areas and building entry points with a residual insecticide
