What attracts mice?

Mice and rats are drawn to the same things any other warm-blooded creature wants: food, shelter and warmth. And all of these things are readily available within your home or business. If rodents find access to this in your property, they will make an effort to stay there for as long as possible. To deter them, you can:

  • Prevent rodents from getting indoors through exclusion
  • Avoid clutter in and around your property
  • Clean food spills and seal your garbage
  • Regularly inspect for signs of rodents

How do Rats Get Inside?

If you want to prevent rats and mice, you need to first find how they’re getting in. Rodents are able to squeeze themselves into cracks, crevices, and other small spaces. In fact, a common urban legend claimed that rats didn’t have bones, which we now know isn’t true. Rodents are just incredibly capable at sneaking, with rats being able to work through openings ½ inch or larger, and mice into holes that are just 5mm wide.

What Do Rodents Eat?

Rodents are scavengers, meaning that they will eat most anything that they can get access to. This could be food crumbs in the kitchen or unsealed garbage cans in the garage. Rats and mice are opportunistic and ready to survive off whatever they can, and some of these rodents’ favorite foods may look like the following:

  • Rats, being larger, have a big appetite for just about anything – especially meat, pet food, cheeses, fish, nuts and garbage.
  • Mice are omnivores for the most part, and primarily eat  grains, vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts and more.

Is Your Home Attracting Mice and Rats?

It’s safe to say that no one wants a home filled with rodents and other nuisance pests, and yet so many property owners don’t take the precautions necessary to deter them. You don’t need to wait for an infestation to keep away rodents. Through preventative measures, as well as exclusion efforts from Batzner’s team of rodent exterminators, you can make sure your home or business stays rat-free all year long.
