The order Rodentia is made up of over 2,000 species and even more families. The largest of the families is the Muridae, which covers nearly two-thirds of rodents – rats and mice included. The United States census once noted that nearly 14.8 million households reported seeing rodents over the course of a year. The statistics on businesses are less public, but it’s safe to stay neither home nor store are immune to rats and mice. But what rodents are most common in Wisconsin? The four most common rodent residents in Wisconsin are:
- Deer Mice
- House Mice
- Norway Rats
- Voles
Common Wisconsin Rodents: An Overview
- Deer mice are most commonly found nesting in rural, outdoor areas. They can be especially dangerous if they infest a home, as they’re able to carry and transmit Hantavirus.
- House mice can be found in dark, secluded areas across the country. They’re great climbers, and inside the home are often known for chewing electrical wires.
- Norway rats are the main offender in most rodent infestations in the area. They burrow beneath homes, causing significant damage and potentially spreading disease.
- Voles, otherwise known as field mice, usually stick to inhabiting grasslands and landscaping with protective ground cover. They cause the most damage to gardens, resulting in dead and drooping plants.
